Aquilegia

Aquilegia: Generalities

The origin of the term aquilegia has long been debated. There are scholars who believe that the name of this flower is closely related to the etymological root of the term and that is aquilegium, which in Latin means water collector and which recalls the concave shape of the leaves of the plant. Instead, there are those who maintain that the name aquilegia has to do with the most regal of birds of prey, the eagle, precisely because the shape of the flower is similar to that of the bird's claws. Whatever interpretation one wishes to give to the term aquilegia, its meaning in the language of flowers is that of caprice, egoism and exhibitionism.
