Absinthe - Artemisia absintium

Perennial herbaceous plant, native to central and southern Europe; from the fleshy rhizomes branch erect, semi-woody stems, up to 80-100 cm high; slightly branched in the lower part, almost not at the top. The leaves are green, rendered greyish by the presence of a thin white hair; they have a pinnate shape, but they tend to become less pinnate rising from the bottom to the top, they give off a strong, very aromatic scent and have a very bitter taste; the apical leaves are thin, linear, smaller than the others. During the summer season it produces small golden heads, gathered in long panicles. The medicinal properties of absinthe are exploited since ancient times, the use of this herb is also mentioned in the Bible. We use mother tincture or dried leaves, with tonic, digestive and anti-inflammatory powers. This plant is also used to produce a strong aromatic liqueur, very bitter, which is consumed diluted or sweetened. In the nineteenth century, absinthe was used in large quantities by European and American artists; the use was suspended due to the hallucinogenic effects found by the great consumers of absinthe; the liqueur produced today contains in much smaller quantities the alkaloid that once caused addiction and hallucinations.

It is a deciduous perennial plant, which therefore completely loses the aerial part during the winter; it is grown in Italy suit, it does not fear the cold. It prefers very sunny locations, avoid shade or excessively humid places.

Watering


They do not need regular watering, although they may like light watering during the hottest and drier periods of summer.

Ground


Grow in a soft and very well drained soil; it is advisable to use a substrate consisting of universal soil mixed with sand and pumice stone; in nature it develops in places with dry and stony ground, even if not very rich.

Multiplication


It occurs in autumn due to the division of the rhizomes; it is advisable to practice the rhizome portions maintaining some well developed roots for each portion practiced. In spring it is possible to sow the small seeds, even directly at home.
