Plants in the dark: Answer: Plants in the dark

Dear Lorenza,
We thank you for contacting us about the problems on your plants, through the "" expert's column. Spathiphyllum (Spathiphyllum Wallisii) is a plant native to Colombia belonging to the arachnee, then related to L'Anturium. It is a plant with a double decorative effect (leaves and flowers). It has bright green lance-shaped leaves. It carries small yellow flowers gathered in a Spadix about 4 cm long, wrapped in a white, ovate Spata, which forms at the base. They are grown in pots with soils that retain the water which is the most important element for the plant. In fact, it requires 2-3 weekly waterings, when temperatures are above 21 ° C daily sprays are recommended. It needs penumbra in summer and full light in winter, temperatures of 16-18 ° C and regular fertilizations. It should be repotted annually. Light is the source of life for plants which, thanks to it, perform the process of chlorophyll photosynthesis at the base of the organic molecules necessary for their survival. The ideal would be to have rooms with homogeneous brightness.
The light requirement varies according to the species cultivated and is conventionally expressed in "Lux" (which represents the unit of measurement of the luminous intensity). If the light is insufficient the leaves remain smaller and sparse, they tend to turn yellow and the stem develops rather stunted. On the other hand, if the light is excessive and above all if the sun's rays arrive directly on the plant, dangerous burns can occur on the leaves, which in some cases compromise the normal functions. These factors are particularly important when talking about houseplants, in fact, the brightness of an environment is not homogeneous in all its points, but varies according to the position with respect to the light source:
Direct sunlight. The one coming from windows located at noon;
Bright light. Corresponds to the direct one, filtered by a transparent curtain;
Medium light. It is typical of environments with windows not exposed at noon;
Low light. Environments far from the light source.
